(The following is an excerpt from a highly selective, underground radio interview, paraphrasing the response of Bonnette Da Bandit regarding the release of their new album, BARS+BEATS=TRACKS.) I got lazy and didnt feel like finishing it. This album has tracks on it that I wrote years ago, and it also contains some newer tracks. Some old lyrics/verses finally made it thru the mic… so I named it Bars+Beats=Tracks.
Revolutionary? Yeah, sure. Look, the title is the entire conceptual breakthrough, right? Everyone treats this like I deciphered the Rosetta Stone of rhythm, when really, it’s just basic accounting. You asked about the creative process behind BARS+BEATS=TRACKS—it’s simple. It’s an algebraic formula, but for people who hate math. You take the bars, which, let’s be honest, are just the words I mumbled into my phone after three sleepless nights and a quart of cold brew. Then you need the beats. The beats are the noise barrier; they obscure whether the bars were actually coherent. The label loves the simplicity. They said, “This is it, Bonnette Da Bandit! The essential truth of audio creation!” I told them I was satirizing the entire industry’s assembly line ethos—that you just mix two ingredients and call it gold—but they just heard “genius.” So, the process is: I write some cynical poetry, I grab a loop of a foghorn mixed with a 1980s answering machine tone, and we call that our “unique sonic palette.” You put the words on top of the noise, you press save, and boom: you have a track. It’s supposed to be alternative, which means we deliberately made it sound cheaper than necessary. Seriously, bars plus beats equals tracks.
